Do I Need Treatment to Stop Procrastinating?

If you have ever found yourself in a situation where you feel the stress from the inability to get motivated, then you are a procrastinator. As procrastination affects everyone in some capacity, it is hard to overcome. Some people seem as though they have it all together but they too, suffer from the same challenges. How then, do they overcome those thoughts of deferring activities? Simply put, some people react differently to different situations. As people are naturally different, there are those that have the ability to overcome challenges on their own while others need help from an outside source.

Conventional therapy can be costly, even if you have insurance. Not only do you have to take time to travel to the therapist and spend at least an hour each session, there are also usually medical co-pays. Many times, only a certain percentage of the bill is covered, forcing the patient to pay what is left. Professional treatment for procrastination is hardly worth the effort.

Procrastination is commonly debated among therapist as either a behavioral attribute or a disorder. Essentially, some feel that procrastination is simply a habit that can be broken with hard work and practice. Others argue that procrastination is a disorder that can only be cured through professional help. Regardless, procrastination is an ugly cycle that can be extremely difficult to come to terms with.

There is evidence that I believe point to both the biological and psychological aspects of procrastination. We now live in a fast -paced world that has adapted to having everything at the touch of our fingers. With the use of cell phones, satellite television, fast food and the internet, people do not have to wait for anything. This technology has in turn, promoted procrastination, especially among the younger generation. On the other hand, studies have shown that twin siblings have more similarities biologically, then regular siblings. This means that bad behaviors can be passed on biologically from parents to their young.

Habitual procrastinators tend to focus on the past, prefer easy tasks, use avoidance techniques and blame others or other situations for their procrastination. If you are one of those people, then seeking treatment for procrastination is your only option for recovery. Although there is not much that can be done for those who suffer from biological procrastination, people that suffer from procrastination because of their surroundings can find treatment quite easily.
